Jake made the news!

Jake made the WFRV-TV Channel 5 news in a video on the Dock Dog competition at Cabela's today! He is shown 4-5 times throughout the video! And what a guy - first time with the Dock Dogs organization and he placed 2nd and 3rd in his 2 jumps with over a 13' jump! Each event he has increased his distance by a foot! Not bad for a dog who didn't know how to swim 6 months ago! THANK YOU SwimDog Wellness Center!

July 4th Barn Hunt 2015 “Jake”

After competing in only one weekend trial since last October, Jake didn't forget what his job was!  He was a machine on Saturday after a day in the sun on Friday at Cabela's in Green Bay to participate in the Dog Diving event. His 4 rat run was 1:49 and his 5 rat run was 1:58 winning him High in Class for each run.  He even tried to help me out by delivering the tube directly to the rat wrangler who was ready to take it until I told Jake to give it to me first!! (I'm not kidding! - videos don’t lie!)  Sunday he was a bit sluggish in the morning and I wondered if it was because he was tired but do believe now it was because he only had ONE rat and felt that it was barely worth his time on the course.  He did however pull out a second place with a 2:05 run and his RATCHX3 title.

As many of you know when I reached RATCHX2 I declared I was now going for speed because I didn't feel like we were improving but rather just collecting Q's.  So,  I set the goal of averaging 2 minute runs (Master allows 4.5 min.) and am happy to say that in the last 10 legs we came close to that with an average time of 2 min. 6 sec.  when previously our average was about 2 min. 46 sec.!!  However, the last 7 trials our average was 1 min, 57 sec.!!   So now what?  Well I told Jake the only thing to shoot for is averaging 1 1/2 min. runs between now and his RATCHX4!   I figure it will take us until at least next summer since I've chosen to only participate in local events (2-3 per year) from now on.

This was posted on the Great Lakes Barn Hunt Facebook page!  thanks Brenda!  Brenda Coffield at Winnegamie Dog Club

IT'S RATCHX3 JAKE. Jake von der Alte Baum "Jake", a German Shepherd Dog owned and handled by Laurel Stone of Larsen, WI, picked up his 45th Master Q today at Winnegamie Dog Club in Menasha, WI to claim his new title RATCHX3. Jake hasn't lost his barn hunt touch, even though he has been spending a lot of his time dock diving. Jake also has the distinction of having earned the first RATCHX in barn hunt history.

Thanks to Winnegamie Dog Club for hosting another great Barn Hunt trial. As always it was a fun weekend!

Congratulations to all the dogs and handlers who competed at this weekend's WDC Barn Hunt trial. We had 4 teams earn RATCH and RATCHX titles, including club members Amy Hanneman, Eric Madsen, and Laurel Stone. LET THEM EAT CAKE. Four RATCH winning teams at the Winnegamie Dog Club Barn Hunt Trials in Menasha, WI had their cake and ate it, too: RATCH SUNNY, RATCHX7 Shirley, RATCHX Abby, and RATCHX3 Jake. The "RATCH" cake has become a tradition at Winnegamie Dog Club afterEric Madsen brought the idea here.

2015.6.27 More Pier Pups

Jake's 12 foot jump this weekend! His biggest liability is the person (me) who is not throwing the bumper far enough!! ... or throwing it so far that it doesn't even end up in the pool!

  • Ali Herrn and Opal Hoffman like this.
  • Ali Herrn practice practice practice smile emoticon you can practice throwing without the dog smile emoticon
    • Laurel's Dogs I know!!! I have an area set up in the yard with a lane 40 feet back for Jake and then a board for me to stand on and a target for me 30 feet out. He has a ton of fun practicing this with me and retrieving the bumper... I, however, have a very sore right shoulder (getting xrays soon) so have had to throw with my left arm and after practicing for days in a row now have a sore left one! lol I do tend to overdo it sometimes!! smile emoticon He doesn't care what my throw is like or how far he jumps because he gets to jump no matter what and it's all fun!

2015.6.12 Jake Dock Diving with Pier Pups

So off we go to Fond du Lac for the dock diving competition at Walleye Weekend!  The weather was beautiful after a soaking rain through the morning, the people were awesome and helpful and Jake was a handful.  He was pretty calm taking it all in UNTIL he realized why we were there!  He is not happy having to wait for his turn but he does it with clenched paws in the ground! What fun!!

Making a statement!

Posted on Facebook….

Dog people, welders, anyone... Jake has yet again tore apart the side of his metal crate (simply because I took Brita out and was paying attention to her and he was left 10 feet behind...) I had this crate made for him (because any normal crate was useless) and had to have one side replaced already. Suggestions (for what to do with crate not what to do with Jake! lol)???

crate2

  • Diane Severson, Beth Catlin and Lisa Geller like this.

  • Cris Lewis Yikes! ... solid metal sides with ventilation slats?

  • Laurel Stone Cris Lewis - any experience with them.. wouldn't it be awfully hot?

  • Cris Lewis no experience ... just a thought. Add a fan on the outside? I have seen some pretty heavy duty ones used by hunters and show people that seems to have enough ventilation, but are much more solid than what I see in the picture here ... Does Jake incur any injuries from this destruction?

  • Kate Witas I would think solid steel with slants ( hunting box) with ac unit attached

  • Laurel Stone I've seen those also Cris and thought about them. I have a good fan I use when necessary. No he hasn't hurt himself thank goodness!

  • Laurel Stone Kate Witas - that's a perfect world... I've seen them and for his size it's well over $1000 and not in the budget. The temporary solution is to simply not take Brita with me which isn't fair to her...

  • Kate Witas Can you build it yourself or do 3 sides so vent out front. He could go for that side but Id choose a side he cant see out

  • Cindy Pischke Call my husband Pete at his shop 920-231-7725 and he can weld it for you.

  • Laurel Stone Something to think about Kate...

  • Laurel Stone Thanks Cindy... I'll do that! I can at least stop and let him take a look at it and get his ideas! smile emoticon

  • Heather Neldner stainless steal solid sides and slat bars for the top and front. Would be much sturdier. Rig up a fan or 2 if you need them to keep him cool. If you can't afford to replace all the sides at once just do one or 2 at a time. it would be a shame for him to hurt himself if he is being a butthead.

  • Tessa Veith-Loewe Oh my goodness. My step dad is a welder. I will ask him what he thinks. This takes Josephine's tendency toward escape to a whole new level.

  • Barbara DePoy Farb We have a metal wire crate for Jaeger as he destroyed everything else. It folds down for travel. It is made by Central Metal products. You can padlock the fold down top,if needed, so he can't force it open.

  • Heather Neldner or you could try something like this-http://www.carrymydog.com/heavy-duty-dog-crate-escape...

  • Jan Krause Van Zeeland Could you just do something with chain link fencing???

  • Andrea Tobolski Dobson Is that aluminum? If so, I'd upgrade to stainless steel. Not all welders can work with aluminum if that's what it is. How's his mouth?

  • Laurel Stone I do have some fencing that is the black wrought iron and was thinking that could be an option for the sides if it could be attached to the outside because he pulls things in rather than push out.

  • Jim Higgins Weld in a thicker gauge expanded metal side.

  • Laurel Stone He pulled in the front of a large airline crate and has done the same thing with a heavy duty wire folding crate. smile emoticon

  • Nathan Frazier First thought for me seeing this pic is broken k9s yowser!

  • Laurel Stone Nathan - yea.. their pretty worn down anyway from sports and bones so no damage done this time.

  • Laurel Stone Andrea - yes... it's aluminum. the one side you don't see was replaced with stainless strips which always is an option but I'd love to keep the cost (and the weight) down. His mouth is fine.... smile emoticon

  • Anna Fagan Workingdogdrygoods.com has a,really nice one

  • Nita Woulf Metal crate.http://www.prodogz.com/K9_Magnum_Crate.htm

  • Aluminum Dog Crates -...BY PRODOGZ.COM

  • Laurel Stone Lots of good ideas... thanks everyone!

  • Laurel Stone Another question for those who suggested the more closed crates. If you put a wet dog in one in hot weather, wouldn't that be a bit steamy? Anyone have experience with that?

  • Sandy Hartfiel I wonder if he needs something more steel than aluminum. Might be stronger.

  • Chelsea Wood Maybe you should talk to a zoo and ask where they get their lion crates!! smile emoticonhaha

  • Wendy Cope Cooke Holy smokes!!!!!!! Proven land shark! He did not cut his mouth or anything did he. Yikes..

  • Marilyn Tokach Holy cow! Jake! Knock it off, dude! You're going to hurt yourself!

  • Kelly Mientke Butkiewicz Oh Jake ...

  • Michael Joubert Scrap the expanded aluminum mesh.
Go with tube or bar stock 3/4 or larger. If going with aluminum have additional cross members added.
    Something along those lines

  • Michael Joubert's photo.

Amy Hannemann Ouch. So glad my escape artist is only 10 pounds. She's done a good number on a handful of regular wire crates, but at least I found a crate that she can't get her teeth on, now. Definitely hope you can find something that works for Jake, and I'd have to second the solid walls or thicker bars/tubing sentiments. If he can't get his teeth on it at all, though, that may be better.

  • Laurel Stone I like the idea of removing the mesh and putting in tubes. It's laying in my garage on it's side and I put the piece of fencing on top to take this picture and then turned the picture. The strips you see replaced mesh on the doors in the first episode but he pulled one of those strips off at one place on the bottom where it was attached. So my idea (before I got these other great ideas) was to see if this iron fence piece could have the ends put off and then have it attached to the outside of the crate removing the mesh. He pulls in to escape so having it on the outside would keep him from pulling it away from the crate. thoughts? ideas? what could go wrong? I'd like to make this crate work because of the size and the convenient sliding doors on each end that I wouldn't get in a stock one.Crate3

  • Brenda Coffield Jake is quite the challenge! He knows how to make a statement.

I couldn’t say it any better than Brenda!!  He does know how to make a statement!

Trick Dog Jake!

Check it out!  Jake – a trick dog!  I always called them skills but when I volunteered to help with a TRICKS class at the Winnegamie Dog Club I realized that all the things he did for me some people called tricks.  SO…  I checked into the titles offered at www.DoMoreWithYourDog.com and again realized that he could do many of the tricks.  I started to log what he did, then videotape him performing and next submit the applications for titles.  He qualified easily for the first four levels and the last one is Champion Trick Dog which I’ll submit when we get back to the staging and taping his performances.

Click here for a spreadsheet of Jake’s tricks with links to the YouTube videos!

Trick Dog title!

Do More With Your Dog!® is the only official sanctioning and organizing body for the sport of Dog Tricks.

Dog trainers tend to train the hardest when working toward a goal—it keeps them motivated, and focused. A Trick Dog title can motivate you by giving you a goal. The Trick Dog title allows you to earn your title on your own time, in front of a witness.

Teaching tricks establishes a pattern of learning, teaches skills and focus, is a positive method of training, and promotes a bond between canine and human.

What Does a Trick Dog Title Mean?

A trick dog title honors the dog, recognizing him as an intelligent and willing partner. It means that your dog loved you enough to work with you and try to understand you, no matter how crazy your requests and how clumsy your attempts.

A trick dog title honors your commitment to your dog, showing that he was important enough in your life to receive your time, your energy, and your undivided attention. You loved your dog enough to engage him, challenge him, bond with him, and help him achieve a goal.

You believed in your dog even when he failed; and you gave him another chance even when nobody else would have; and in the end your faith in him was justified.

You are an owner who did more with your dog. And that makes your dog the luckiest dog in the world.

WDC Banquet and Awards

Winnegamie Dog Club always does a wonderful job of acknowledging members' achievements by adding AKC titles to a perpetual plaque and awarding certificates for other wins and achievements. Last year was Jake's year in Barn Hunt Association, LLC so he added a list of titles to his plaque and had a pile of certificates awarded to him! I'm so proud of him and he truly lives up to his nickname "Rock Star Jake"!

Added to Jake's plaque were the following Barn Hunt titles: RATO, RATS, RATM, RATCH, RATCHX, and RATCHX2.

Certificates were awarded for:

  • 29 1st place wins (15 high in Class), 11 2nd place wins and 2 ***3rd place wins (one certificate as per my request!)
  • 1st dog to achieve RATCHX in Barn Hunt
  • 2nd dog to achieve RATCHX2 in Barn Hunt
  • 2nd place in Master at Nationals
  • 1st place in Senior at Nationals (personal best of 77 seconds)
  • 2nd place and Silver Medal at Nationals

Really, Jake….

OK…  follow me on this…  the container in the pictures was upside down where Jake is standing in the first picture.  When we went out in the yard Jake KNEW there was something underneath it so was fixated on it.   Brita and I walked by and he was digging away.  As Brita and I get to the other end of the yard I started calling and whistling for Jake because I wanted him to get some running in but he didn’t come.  ok..  I figure hunting won which usually doesn’t happen.

20141122_155613        20141122_155210

As we head back to the house we see and pass by the upside down container about 4 feet away from where it was when he was digging.  I figured he got something and is somewhere in the yard with it recalling one time that he took about 30 minutes to eat a rabbit.  More calling…  no Jake.  Then it dawns on me….  he took whatever it was he got into the house! (eewww…  recalling the rabbit, squirrel, dove, and possum)  So …..Brita and I walk into the garage, through the first floor, down through the basement and out to the garage ….  no Jake.

As we head back out to the yard and pass by the container I said to Brita “what’s under there” as I lifted the corner up.  Much to her delight a LIVE mouse runs out…  (temporarily live mouse) so now Brita is very interested and I’m wondering what really is under there.

A note here…  Both dogs were outside barking early this morning and there have been wayward possum and probably other critters in the yard in the past so I really wasn’t sure.

AND THEN IT HIT ME!  JAKE IS UNDER THE CONTAINER!

So we lifted a side up and yup…  out he comes! Somehow when he was digging it out it flipped over on him – 4 feet away!  How do things like that happen anyway!?!?

20141122_155245        20141122_15530220141122_155548

So here’s the lesson.  What if this would have happened when I was away.  He was not indicating at all that he was there and was simply waiting to be rescued.  What if it had been summer and hot….  that I hate to think about. We walked by it several times and he never moved and Brita paid no more attention to it than she did any other time we passed it.  IT IS NOT THAT HEAVY and he could have at any time simply stood up!  What a goof he can be but it sure is scary at the same time!!

It can’t be said enough….

…..that it takes a village….  This past weekend at our home club, Jake ended our amazing 2014 with 3 blue ribbons with one earning him a high in class ribbon also.  All his achievements wouldn’t have happened without the many people involved in barn hunt.  I’d like to personally thank:

  • Gail, Brenda and Becky for bringing barn hunt to Wisconsin
  • the people and dog clubs who organized the trials we attended
  • the 14 judges we trialed under who always strove to be fair and consistent in their judging
  • the workers who volunteered their time
  • Lisa and Tammy for taking GREAT pictures
  • the cooks and kitchen staff who fed the workers delicious food
  • the people who raised and provided rats for the trials
  • anyone who I handed my video camera to who graciously agreed to tape Jake
  • my new friends who brought their rats to my house and offered me all kinds of great tips on how to resolve “issues”
  • the farmers who brought straw inside my yard to me…  oops.. they probably won’t be seeing this post now will they … anyway…

I’m certainly looking forward to spring wondering how Jake will react after not seeing rats for 4 months!  Perhaps the squirrels and rabbits in the yard will keep him entertained so he doesn’t forget his job!

The Winnegamie Trial

20141111_143148

Close to home!!  Woohoo!  And Jake finished the season with three 1st place finishes and a High in Class ribbon!!   I took the ribbons to the yard to get a picture, carefully hung them in the shed with the straw and tried to round him up.  Well..  apparently getting his 20141111_145325picture taken did not hold a candle to the fun of running through the yard after critters, hawks, other birds, the neighbor’s dog, people on the road, the school bus or any other vehicles, etc. because he pretty much pouted when I tried to get him to pose for a photo!  All he did was look out of the shed at Brita who was waiting patiently for him to come back out and play!

      20141111_151056

OK…  truth be told…  He does look happier sniffing for whatever is in the woodpile with Brita!!

It’s all about the relationship

Participating in a dog sport is not just what happens for a few minutes in the ring.  It's the relationship that develops between a person and his or her dog.  The time in the ring is simply one of the moments in time that is spent together and the title is successful outcome of the training and time spent together.  Quite honestly, if anyone wants to compare unsuccessful times in the ring in any sport, I guarantee that I probably have a huge lead on number of NQs after competing in not just AKC/UKC obedience but also in Schutzhund/PSA/SDA protection sports with what I refer to as my previous generation of dogs.  I often said that failing is what made me a better dog trainer, what showed me where my training weaknesses were and what ultimately made us successful.  Have I driven across country only to NQ a minute into the time on the trial field?  .... you bet.  Did my dog care?   oh...  probably not, he was just excited that we were on an adventure together.

Recently I posted to the Great Lakes Barn Hunt Facebook group some stats about how Jake has done since we started a year ago.  Someone pointed out that I didn't list the cost of getting to RATCHX2 ....   yep that's correct... There are some things I simply don't want to know how much they cost! Last and not least of the what I get out of competing, whether I win or lose,  is the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends!!  And always...  it's about having fun with my dog!
